A tres bientot donc!

We're back in France, but it would not be right not to share our last destination, Zanzibar. So is Zanzibar as good as its reputation being a magical and seducing island that makes you dream? Yes. Is it really the spice, pirat and eastern style island? Yes.

You get is, we really liked Zanzibar! Moreover we were able to go swim with dolphins, magical... We left in a small fishing boat with masks and fins and the captain says so we go in the water see Flipper! Excellent!
We also really liked the city Stonetown very Eastern like and where women are beautiful in their very colorfull clothes. Well, ok, the beach with the lagoon, the white sand and all was also great.
Funny detail, on the our last evening, we decided to go enjoy a very nove restaurant on the beach, feet in the sand. On we got all settled, in this very romantic set with musicians and all, we got a big thunder storm with high winds and rain. Losers! But we had lots of fun though!

So this is the end of our trip but we really want to make it go on, that's why we plan on sharing with you more videos and details on what we really liked like the Kili. Stay tuned!

Safari... magique

Here we are, back from our safari (that actually simply means "travel" in swahili). With lots of references in mind, like "Out of Africa" (yes girls,we're all the same) it was quite funny to see what a real safari is...
So no white table sheet nor Mozart or hair washing with a bucket, but yes we had diner outside at sunset on scottish table sheet with good South African wine in the middle of the savana, big Jeep in high grass and above all...lions, gnous, antelops for real and beautiful.

Seriously, we went to Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the famous Serengeti parks for 5 days. And now we can tell you that it's almost all the same as in the "Lion King"! Lions spend their time on big rocks overlooking the plains, hyenas hang out in group and don't look that smart, warthogs run with their tail up high... Moreover, at Disney's, they didn't think too much: for lion in swahili you say simba and for warthog, guess... pumba.

All the above is quite similar to the very good spirit we had in our little group of adventurers gone on the tracks.
On the useful side, we left with an agency called Wild Spirit and our guide Geoffrey was excellent.
Well an unforgetable memory!

On l'a fait!!! - We did it!!!

We wanted to go to Pokhara, just to see what it looked like and also to try to see the Annapurnas.
Finaly, we found little interest in the city, after what we had seen in Kathmandu and in the Valley, except the fact that it's quite melow by the lake. We tryed to see the Annapurnas range by waking up 2 mornings in a row at 5am but we haven't been that lucky... We saw a bit of mountain in the clouds, but it's always better than nothing!

Also, we visited the International Moutain Museum (IMM) that talks about local high peaks conquests. Very interesting! They were so crazy at that time, the guys who went to conquest the 8000m in the 1950's. So we have now readings along the same lines, Annapurna, premier 8000, by Maurice Herzog for Fred and Into Thin Air (about Everest for me).
Both books talk about crazy and dangerious stuff happening to the alpinists. That way we think different for Kilimandjaro that will look like a dog walk in comparison (heuuuu, not sure though...)

As promissed in the previous post, here are more details about our visit of the Kathmandu valley... This valley regroup a big part of the population in Nepal (not too cold like in the mountain, not so many desease like in the jungle in the South), a place where it's nice to live.

So we visited come villages more beautiful one than another. We loved Bakhtapur, a small village where it feels like you're in Middle Age, where everything is clam and where streets and monuments are of rare beauty (It seems that Bertolucci shot some scenes of Little Bouddha here). This afternoon, we go to Patan, another village.

Well we also went to get lost in villages even smaller (we left for an hour and a halh and hiked for more than 4 hours, but it's good for kili training!)

Well, we like it a lot here!

Kathmandu

It's not easy to arrive in Kathmandu without having an image in mind already, true or false: city from which you go to the moutain, hippie base, art place... With Fred, we had read just before the book by Barjavel Les chemins de Kathmandu about hippies in love, and of course it influenced a bit our mind.
We have to admit that it took us some time to get used to it: getting used to the poverty (even if you don't get really used to that), the dirtyness... But passed this, we discovered and visited the city with great pleasure. It's an amazing place when the thing that stroke us the most is the life that's there. You can find small shops everywhere (not talking about tourist stuff). Here everything gets sold or fixed, on the ground, walking, biking. Every street corner you'll find a temple, a small patio with gods, a real treasure hunt!
And we loved some funny details: cows in the middle of the street that eat everything but that nobody moves because they are sacred, the erotic statues on boudhis temples (we don't imagine that on our churches!) and also the hippie atmosphere that's still here a little bit. Of course we like way less the fact that we get approached by sellers all the time (though it happens less and less, they must recognize us now) and we like even less the look of kids starving in the street (when we give them bread, they look si happy!) or worse the one that use drugs such as glue (not sure we say that in English).
To sum up, after one or two days of mixed feelings, we can tell you that we really like Kathmandu now and its valley even more, but that will be for the next episode.

PS: lots of difficulties to put pictures online now from Nepal.

enneiges a 7000m: trop trop beau.

We're back from the trek (since 3 days now). We were finally gone for 8 days. Here is a short sump up of our adventure. It all started with an endless local bus ride (with the chickens). And when we say endless... 9 hours in narrow seats for just 110km (almost faster by foot!). Actually, only half of the road is paved and the rest is a big trail with the river 1000m below (I don't beleive in God but I prayed for 4 hours not to fall down the river...). You have to deserve your mountain here!

But it's true that it's a real delight and that moutains here are extraordinary... We went up for 3 days to arrive a 4000 crossing several villages, among those Lantang village, which is the name of the trek. At the top, we were at the bottom of the snowy peaks at 7000: so beautiful. Next time, we try to climb!

But the trek was also about meeting and discovering tibetan families in the lodges, more welcoming and warm each time. Really, we met very nice people.

Well, we also became pro at Nepali card games, playing like crasy with our guide Tika and our porter Ramesh. We had lots of fun by the stove.

I won't go into details but we also enjoyed stomacakes, diarheas and so on, but without that it would not have been the same ;-) (not sure Fred shares that point of view)And even if we were sad to leave the high mountains, we were happy to find hot showers, heated bedroom, good food and ... internet (we're ashamed, we can't help it...)

Well, trekking in the Himalaya, a dream that became true. Now we already want to go back!

Nepal!!!

Quick post to let you know that we're in Kathmandu since yesterday - We're ok - But we're freezeing (not such a good idea to ge from Bangkok, 35 degrees to Katmandu, 5 degrees) - The city is surprising and cool - We leave tomorrow for a trek for 8 to 15 days, so no news during that time except if we find internet, but we really doubt it!

After our cool stay in Chiang Mai, we left for three days in the capital. And it was quite a shock to go from one to the other. We knew Bangkok wat a huge megalopole, but it's also a wird city.
Here you go without any transition from the street where people sells everything (even frogs or cat fish in smelly buckets) to huge futuristics malls where you find all the brands you want (Channel, Sony, Zara, l'Occitane). It feels like being in two parallel worlds: the wet outside and the coolness of the malls, the cleanness of the butiques and the dirtyness of the streets...
So on our first day, after walking in the streets and the pollution, we decided to go to a big mall to train a bit (imposible to exercise outside) for Fred's knee. After an intense halh an hour bus, we discovered the hidden face of bangkok... worked out for an hour in a reall fitness center and then went to the movis watch an American comedy! Yes, we took our mdernity and western air breath!!! Moreover, theaters in Bangkok are really something to try: a big room for only 20 seats.. seats more like big armchairs that turn out to be almost beds! (pictures to be coming)

Arriving in Chang Mai, we hesitated a little bit... We were going to go for a trek, but we realized that it wasn't exactly a trek the way we meant it (it includes an elephant ride, a rafting ride... with 10 other tourists). So we finaly rented a bike and we left with a small backpack to discover Thailand by the North west border of Birmanie.
And we spent three great days! Far from the cities, we discovered beautiful landscapes, small lost villages and nice people. The bike experience was awesome too: here, no need to have a license to rent a bike, luckily for us cause Fred doesn't have one (so the exit of the city was quite a thing). We drove up and down on soemething like ten passes on little mountain roads and appart fom the buttache (for me) it was amazing!!!
For the details, we slepts in a cute guesthouse (Little Eden in Soppong) and we saw some local ethnies among which the Long Necks - to be seen but quite strange, kind of feeling you're visiting a human zoo.
To sum up, Eric, Vinz, we definitely want to join the bikers club because it was really cool, one of the best memories of Thailand.

After our long trip, we discovered the nice city of Chang Mai North West of Thailand. It's a very good place. We were staying at a Guesthouse owned by a French/Thai couple (C&C Teackhouse) in a teack huse (how original), very typical, and very nice.
In Chang Mai, you'll find tons of temples and a great market on Sunday evenings that we really enjoyed. For Fred, on the first day, it was also the special visit of all the restrooms of the city. But that's also houw you discover a city, isn't is? ;-)
Finally, on the last day, we also tried a cooking class, and thai curry has no secret for us anymore! So we're inviting you for a good Thai diner at home (when we'll have a home of course!)

Le jour le plus long - The longest day

On a cru mourir dix fois!

8:00 - It all started with a boat ride for half an hour, early in the morning.
9:00 - Then, we took a "cab" to go from Krabi to Phuket airport. There, not only we left quite late, but also, as we were late, our driver thought he had to catch up with time so he drove like crazy... We thought we would die ten times!
13:00 - Finaly, we manage to catch ou flight (it is late anyway) for Bangkok.
16:00 - From Bangkok, we catch a cab to go to the train station, wishing that they'll have spleepers tickets... because we're going to spend 13 hours in the train. And...no, we'll travel in regular seats.
19:00 - We've been in the train for a couple of hours now, but it's not so bad, and we're quite happy. We have the feeling that our trip is really getting started while we're leaving the South to ge to the North of Thailand.
8:00 (the day after) - Yes, we're there, in Chang Mai after a 24 hour trip!!!

Today, we're in Chang Mai, in the North of Thailand, but let's go back to our stay in the South.

We spend some days on Ko Lanta Island, way more aithentic than Ko Phi. In addition to our usual beach and runs, we tryed the scouter around the island and we did a great dive in the middle of the sea on two sites, Hin Deng and Hin Mung (yes, now we're fluent in Thai ;-). We saw great purple coral, lots of fish, little shrimps eating in our hands, a leopard shark and a calamary! Awesome!

Then we left for Krabi, a more touritic place, but really beautifull with cliffs falling in the water and surrounding the beaches. So we just let is go, enjoying the beach, feet massage on the beach, and kili training on ... the beach.

Right now, we are January 31 evening and we are writing from Ko Lanta, another island in the Andaman sea. It must be around 30 degrees celcius, feet in the sand.. (just to set up the scene) But let's come back to our stay at Phi Phi.Ko Phi Phi is a gorgious island with turquoise and warm water. The only downside was that we were not the only ones to enjoy it, but honextly, it's really worth it!
Here is what we did there:
- stay on a lost beach away from the crowds (Relax Beach, mentioned earlier)
- boat trip to Maya Bay wich is the beach from The Beach
- Encounter with monkeys (Fred felt he was with his counterparts)
- PADI training for 3 days (first level for diving): great, tons of fishes and even tortles!
- a certain amount of Mai Tai cocktails with Ravit
But we still had our little problems:
- after 3 nights, we had to leave our beautiful and lost bungalows so we moved to a beach close by with Ravit to end up in disgusting bungalows (for the same price). So we walked at low tide and even at night to go back to our beloved beach.
- I am all eaten by some insects when Ravit and Fred don’t have anything
- during our dives we were supposed to have a 30 meters visibility whe we actually had something like…8.

Now it’s time for us to go back to the beach and to wish you a very happy new year!!!
Oh and all our pictures are on pikeo.

Devinez qui est derriere l'ananas - Guess who's behind the pinaple

So good!

Petit retour sur le pourquoi du comment du voyage - Step back on the why of the trip

Bonne lecture!

Mountains and discoveries in a parenthesis of tropical beaches (Thailand and Zanzibar), that sums up pretty much our trip.

Behind all that, there are the runnings (for Fred's knee and for the our kilimandjaro training) that we'll try to do everywhere we'll go, taking videos! (we already started in Ko Phi Phi)

Of course, the point of the trip is human, animal (diving, safari) discovery.

Finaly, our beloved mountains are at the center of the trip with the North of Thailand, Nepal and Kilimandjaro.

Enjoy!

Jour-J, D-day (from Doha in Qatar)

Yes, we're gone!!! (and yes, we must have checked 10 times to see if we had our passports, tickets, credit cards, mosquito repellent and so on... but we made it)

Right now, we're at the Doha airport, in Qatar (quite logical when you fly with Qatar Airlines, and we're attaching a map because if you're like us, you may not know where it is) The flight was great, Qatar rocks: good service, good seats and huge bathroom where you can fit 4 people (not sure it's that usefull though) And the airport is very modern and brand new with a good duty-free and free internet.

Next episode in Thailand!
